To TEMSList Subscribers and TEMS Medical Operations Committee:
Attached to this email is information concerning a proposed bill in the
Virginia legislature on reporting child abuse by EMS personnel. Neither
the Tidewater EMS Board nor any TEMS committees have taken any position
on the bill, but we would like to get this information out to our region
so that you are aware of it and can investigate whether or not you and
your agency would like to take a position on it. Below is a message for
Dr. Theresa Guins, Chair of the state's EMS for Children Committee.

Subject: Very Important EMS for Children issue!
Greetings and Happy New Year to all of you.
I am writing regarding an issue that is very important to the children
of our state.
It is regarding the issue of EMS providers becoming mandated reporters
of child abuse, which they currently are not.
As many of you know, this topic has been hotly debated for some time.
Senate Bill. No. 228 was introduced this week which would add EMS
providers to the extensive list of health care providers that are
mandated to report suspected child abuse as they currently are only for
elder abuse.
I am trying to drum up as much support as I can as I am told that the
legislators need to hear from the providers themselves with support.
Those that oppose this are claiming that the EMS providers do not
support this cause, which is not the case based on survey responses from
over 2000 VA providers. (See attached provider survey).
I am therefore asking for your help.
Please contact every EMS provider that you can think of and ask them to
contact their senate representative in support of this bill.
I have attached some supporting documentation that may be helpful.
Thank you for your assistance.
