Keeping you up-to-date with regional and state EMS news, events,
meetings and training opportunities
Special recognition to all who responded to or supported the response to
the Suffolk tornadoes on Monday April 28 and the following days. Well
done!! We will work with local commanders to develop an EMS after
action report and share "lessons-learned" with responders in the near
future.

Public Safety Response to Terrorism Awareness Courses
The course is designed to provide all public-sector emergency responders
with awareness-level information on terrorist incidents. This course
will define terrorism and the challenges facing emergency responders
today.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Acute & Occult Chemical Exposure July 17 in
Norfolk
In the twenty-first century, medical professionals will be on the front
lines in the early detection of occult chemical exposures, whether they
are environmental disasters or deliberate contaminants. This seminar
will prepare physicians and other emergency medical personnel to
recognize and treat acute chemical exposures by reviewing key clinical
signs and current management principles for some of the most likely
chemical, biological and radioactive agents. No cost but registration
is required.

Vital Concepts Conference May 10 in Richmond
LifeEvac is holding an annual Vital Concepts Conference on Saturday May
10, 2008 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. The Pre-Conference
is the Difficult Airway Course for EMS which will be held on May 8 - 9.
The conference is designed for pre-hospital, emergency medicine, and

Q464 - ICS 300, Intermediate All Hazard NIMS ICS Review for Expanding
Incidents
Q466 - ICS 400, Fundamentals Review for Command and General Staff.
Both of these courses are located under the Incident Management Subject
Area in the Course Catalog. These courses do not meet the requirements
for ICS 300 and ICS 400, but they can be used as precourse modules or
refresher training for the classroom based ICS 300 and ICS 400 level
courses.

Nominations Open for 2008 Tidewater EMS Regional Awards
The program information and nomination forms are on the Council's

nominations is June 16, 2008 - BUT DON'T WAIT! Note the High School
Senior Scholarship nomination form is a separate form. The $1000
scholarship award is open to high school seniors who are affiliated with
an EMS agency in Tidewater Virginia. Regional EMS award first place
winners will be sent to the Governor's EMS Advisory Board to compete at
the state level in the Governor's EMS Awards. In 2007, three Tidewater
nominees became state winners! FYI...our annual Tidewater EMS Family
Picnic and Awards program has been moved up this year, and will be held
July 27. Watch for details.

National EMS Week is May 18 - 24; Region promotes Bike Safety Awareness
This year's national theme is Your Life is Our Mission. The Tidewater
EMS Council received a grant from the Virginia Department of Health
Injury Prevention to support "BIKE SAFETY AWARENESS" this year's
regional EMS week theme, for the purchase of children's bicycle helmets.
We will distribute these to any EMS agency conducting a Bicycle Safety
Day or open house. The TEMS Council will also supply EMS Week kits. If
your agency is interested in holding a Bicycle Safety Day or other EMS
Week event, please contact Heidi K. Hilchey at the TEMS office

National EMS Memorial Services is May 24 in Roanoke
The 16th Annual National EMS Memorial Service will take place on May 24,
2008 at 6:00 pm at the First Baptist in Roanoke, Virginia. Please take a
moment at that time to join us in remembering our fallen colleagues.

Hurricane and Preparedness State Sales Tax Holiday May 25 - 31
The General Assembly passed legislation last year establishing a
Hurricane and Emergency Preparedness Equipment sales tax holiday, May
25-31. The annual holiday is a temporary period during which purchases
of certain items, including portable generators, are exempt from the
sales and use taxes. In addition to the specific items exempted for each
holiday period, dealers may also elect to absorb the tax on any item

2008 Community Based Emergency Response Seminars - Communicating
Effectively in a Crisis
All first-responders and emergency service personnel interested in
enhancing their public communication skills during a crisis should
attend one of the seven scheduled CBERS workshops. This year's topics
cover basic communication skills, communicating during a crisis,
communicating with older adults, communicating in a school environment,
breaking down cultural barriers and psychology of a crisis. Seminars
will be:
