**ATTENTION COUNTY/CITY GOVERNMENTS, TOWNSHIPS, AND ALL FIREFIGHTERS AND
EMS ORGANIZATIONS**
The Department of Homeland Security has announced the 2007 Assistance to
Firefighters Grant (AFG) program on the www.Grants.gov
<http://www.grants.gov/> Website or at www.firegrantsupport.com
<http://www.firegrantsupport.com/> . A program of the Preparedness
Directorate's Office of Grants and Training in the U.S. Department of
Homeland Security, grants are awarded to fire departments to enhance
their ability to protect the public and fire service personnel from fire
and related hazards. The program is a competitive grant opportunity for
local fire departments and emergency medical services (EMS)
organizations not affiliated with a hospital. The AFG funds activities
such as purchasing firefighting equipment, personal protective
equipment, training, firefighting and EMS vehicles, as well as
firefighter/first responder safety projects.
Three types of grants are available:
* Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG): The primary goal of
the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) is to meet the firefighting
and emergency response needs of fire departments and nonaffiliated
emergency medical services organizations.
* Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S): The purpose of the Staffing
for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grants is to help fire
departments increase the number of frontline firefighters.
* Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER): The
Fire Prevention and Safety Grants (FP&S) grants support projects that
enhance the safety of the public and firefighters from fire and related
hazards.
Each year the AFG regional staff conducts hundreds of workshops
nationwide to provide up to date grant information to applicants. On
Thursday, January 25, 2007 the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program
(AFG) posted the FY 2007 AFG workshop schedule on its website:
www.firegrantsupport.com. The workshops are scheduled and conducted by
AFG regional representatives and offer current program information for
any fire and/or EMS organization that wishes to submit a 2007 AFG
application.
Rep. Thelma Drake (VA-02) has coordinated with the U.S. Department of
Homeland Security to bring two workshops to the Second Congressional
District. Rep. Drake will personally be in attendance at the events.
