Subject: Medication Shortage - TEMS Region
There is a continuing lack of medication availability for the regional
medication boxes. The Tidewater EMS Region continues to see shortages,
including Valium, Versed, Ativan and Magnesium Sulfate. The regional
pharmacists are working to assure there will be adequate supplies, but these
are national shortages. The hospitals have stated they will re-stock the
medication boxes the best they can with what they have available as long as
they are able. If there is a medication removed, please request a medication
removed sticker if there is not one on the box already. The TEMS Council is
working with the Medical Operations Committee to make recommendations of
alternative medications to use till the supply has been restored.
All Providers are cautioned to assume nothing. Double and triple check every
medication in the box to ensure it is the right drug, the right dosage and
concentration, and the delivery method. Look at how drugs are labeled,
packaged, and their concentrations. Some changes have already been made and
are inconsistent from hospital-to-hospital, depending on availability of
medications.
It is strongly recommend that you take every opportunity to look inside a
medication box when it is open. The Tidewater EMS Council will continue to
reevaluate the medication supply capability.
